Help with FileBoxes . . .

Free SendThisFile® FileBox

First Free FileBox (Creating the HTML Code)

  1. Make sure you are logged in to your SendThisFile® account. You won't be able to get to the SendThisFile® FileBox page unless you are logged in to your SendThisFile® account.
  2. Fill in the Web site box with the URL of the website on which the FileBox will reside (example, www.layerz.com).
  3. Put the email address to which you want notification emails sent in the E-mail box.
  4. If you want your users to have to use a password, fill in the Password box. If you leave the Password box empty, anyone will be able to send you a file without a password.
  5. Click on Add (or Update if you are returning) and the copy and paste box will fill with the text you need for your Web site. The name of the Web site will appear in the box at the top of the page along with a Remove button.
  6. You can now use the SendThisFile® FileBox that is located below the copy and paste box to test the SendThisFile® FileBox you just built.
  7. Put your email address in the Your e-mail box.
  8. Put a test message in the Message box.
  9. Browse for the file you want to send, or type in the complete path and file name. (Trust us – it’s best to browse.)
  10. Click on Send and you will receive a notification email at the email address you entered in Step 3 above. A progress bar will appear below the File box. Once the file is finished uploading you will see the message File sent successfully appear in the Message box.
  11. Copy and paste the code into any page on your Web site.

Using FrontPage to put a FileBox on your Website

There are two "views" in FrontPage. One of them is an "HTML" view. Make sure you are in "HTML" mode (you will see lots of HTML code when you are in "HTML" mode) before you paste in the HTML code for the FileBox.

  2. Click on the Update button.
  3. The new text will appear in the Copy and paste box.
  4. Copy and paste the code onto your Web site.

Removing a Website

  1. Click on the Remove button.

Customizable SendThisFile® FileBox

Basic Set-up

  1. Make sure you are logged in to a paid SendThisFile® account. You won't be able to work on a customizable SendThisFile® FileBox unless you are logged in to a paid SendThisFile® account.
  2. Enter the URL for the website on which the FileBox will be installed in the Web site box (example, www.layerz.com).
  3. Enter the email address to which you want the notification emails sent in the E-mail box.
  4. If you want your users to have to use a password, fill in the Password box. If you leave the Password box empty, anyone will be able to send you a file without a password.
  5. Click on Add (or Update if you are returning) and the copy and paste box will fill with the text for the sample FileBox. The name of the Web site will appear in the box at the top of the page along with a Remove button.
  6. The SendThisFile® FileBox below the copy and paste box is now live and can be used for testing.

Customizing the SendThisFile®FileBox

Completing the Prompts

  1. Paid account holders can click on the Use custom settings box, and a checkmark will appear.
  2. Enter the text in the Your e-mail prompt box that you want to appear above the box for the email entry in the customized SendThisFile® FileBox.
  3. Enter a prompt for the password (if used) in the Password prompt box.
  4. The text in the Message prompt box will appear above the message area in the finished FileBox as shown in the sample FileBox.
  5. Enter the prompt for the file in the File prompt box.

Note: The prompt boxes will accept HTML codes. For example, putting <br> after any of the prompts will cause a blank line to appear between the prompt and its respective box.

Labeling the Buttons

  1. The text you put in the Send button box will appear on the button used to start the upload (labled "SendThisFile" in the sample FileBox).
  2. The text you put in the Cancel button box will appear on the button that cancels an upload.

Sizing the Customizable SendThisFile® FileBox

Caution: Using different browsers (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Safari, etc.) cause the FileBox to appear differently to the user. The FileBox sizes shown are the best compromise between overall appearance and working properly with all browsers. Changing the sizes shown below MAY cause the FileBox to appear odd (e.g., buttons overlapping, part of the FileBox cut off, etc.) in one or more browsers.

  1. The Box width dimension is in pixels. This value sets the overall width of the SendThisFile® FileBox frame. The best compromise FileBox width is 292 pixels.
  2. The Box height dimension is in pixels. This value establishes the overall height of the frame for the customized FileBox. The box height includes the Header and the Footer. The best compromise FileBox height is 365 pixels. Use 405 pixels when the FileBox has a password.

Note: The value in Box height sets the frame size for a finished, customized SendThisFile® FileBox. If the value in Box height is not set tall enough to accomodate the Header and the Footer, the finished FileBox will be 'squashed', or parts will be missing, so that it will fit within the designated frame height. If the Box height dimension is set too tall, a white background will grow above the Header and/or below the Footer to fill in the extra space.

Size (width) of the Input Boxes

  1. The Email width: dimension is in characters. This sets the width for the Your e-mail: box. The best compromise setting for the Email width: is 52 characters.
  2. Message width: controls the width of the Message: area on the finished FileBox. The best compromise setting for Message width: is 50 characters.

Coloring the SendThisFile® FileBox

  1. The Background color is the color of the finished SendThisFile® FileBox. The color in the Background color box will replace the gray background area on the following sample FileBox.
  2. Our system recognizes the extended HTML color set. A color chart is available by clicking on the HTML color codes link next to the Background color box. You can use the text or the hex codes in the Background color box. When using the hex codes, make sure the code is preceded by a "#" symbol. When entering the color name or hex codes, make sure there are no trailing spaces or the color will be incorrect!

Note: For the nicest appearing FileBox with all browsers, we highly recommend that the background color be set to the same color as the page on which the FileBox resides. We have shown the FileBox with a contrasting color here so that the overall size is obvious for planning purposes.

About the Structure of a SendThisFile® FileBox

  1. The Head is the equivalent of the Head section on an HTML page. This area is for meta tags and other HTML coded set-up instructions. If plain text is placed in this area, it will appear in a white space floating above the Header in a finished FileBox.
  2. The Header is meant to be the highest, visible part of a SendThisFile® FileBox. The "SendThisFile" logo and "Your e-mail:" are in this section in the sample FileBox. The Header area takes on the color shown in the Background color box.
  3. The Footer area falls below the buttons. This area is not shown in the sample FileBox. The Footer area takes on the color shown in the Background color box.

Note: The colored part of the Footer expands to accomodate the text. If the text is lengthy enough to word wrap, or if a series of <br> tags are included, the Footer will expand as needed (frame height permitting) to accomodate the additional lines.

Making It All Happen: The Update Button

  1. The Update button applies the information in the customization boxes to the HTML code in the copy and paste area, and to the sample SendThisFile®FileBox.
  2. Once you have updated all your changes, you can copy and paste the code into any page on your website.

To make the transfer secure using SSL encryption

Once you have pasted the HTML code onto your website, change the "http:" part of the URL from "http:" to "https:". This will cause the files to transfer over the secure portion of our website.

Hosted SendThisFile® FileBox

Once you have set up your SendThisFile® FileBox, you can set up a free hosted FileBox. Hosted FileBoxes are not SSL encrypted.

The link to your free hosted FileBox combines the Web page URL, plus the "widgetcode" for your FileBox. You can find the "widgetcode" for your FileBox on your FileBox page. The "widgetcode" looks like this in the HTML text just above the sample FileBox:

<iframe src="http://www.sendthisfile.com/filebox/index.jsp?
widgetcode="abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwx" marginwidth=0 marginheight=0>

The "widgetcode" is 24 characters in length.

To create a link to your free hosted FileBox add the "widgetcode" for your FileBox to the basic URL for the hosted FileBox page. For example:

http://www.sendthisfile.com/f.jsp?id=abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwx

Here is a sample link. When you click the link you will see a sample hosted FileBox.

http://www.sendthisfile.com/f.jsp?id=xu5nd5QeQ67gYwD5OBHpHdBu

When Things Go Wrong

If there is something wrong with the link, the most common error message is "Recipient e-mail address is required". Make sure you have an email address in the E-mail box on your FileBox page. Make sure the "widgetcode" on the link matches the "widgetcode" on your FileBox page EXACTLY. The best way to do that is to copy and paste the "widgetcode" from your FileBox page to wherever you're creating the link.

Can't get it to work? That happens sometimes for various reasons. No problem! Use our contact link, or our support chat system ("support chat" link at the top of the page), and we'll help you get going.
