Q: My ISP only allows email attachments up to 2 MB. Can you transfer this 11 MB picture file for me?
A: Yes. Your Internet service provider’s (ISP’s) email attachment restrictions do not limit the size of the files you can transfer using SendThisFile®. And the persons who will receive your large files will not be affected by any email attachment restrictions imposed by their ISPs. We do not transfer large files as email attachments. Delivery is a three-step process. (1) You upload the file to our server. (2) When uploading is complete, we send an email to the person with whom you want to share the file. (3) The person sharing your file clicks on a link in the email, and the download process begins. The only part you will see is Step 1. We have made it easy to transfer large files.
Q: Does the recipient have to be registered at SendThisFile® in order to receive a file?
A: No. Only the sender has to have an account at SendThisFile®.
Q: Is my file secure when I'm transferring it online?
A: SendThisFile® uses 128-bit SSL encryption for security for our Paid Accounts during upload and download. Enterprise clients have the option of using 64-bit DES encryption for security while the file is on our server. Both methods of encryption are secure enough to transfer large legal documents, medical records and medical images. SendThisFile® meets the transfer requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA"). Our Free Accounts do not use any encryption, so security is the equivalent of email. If you have a Free Account, and want to encrypt your files, consider using PGP, one of the premier encryption utilities, with millions of users worldwide.
Q: Do you make back-ups of our files while they are on your server?
A: No. We do not make back-ups of the files that are being transferred over our system. This guarantees there are no copies of anyone's private documents that can be compromised. Senders should always keep copies of the files they transfer until they are sure their recipients have received them.
Q: How can I tell how long it will take to upload or download a file?
A: It depends on the type of connection you have to the Internet. Here are some formulas you can use to make a rough estimate.
b = bits (there are eight bits to a byte)
B = bytes (file sizes are normally expressed in bytes)
Kb = kilobits = thousands of bits
Kb/s = kilobits per second = thousands of bits per second
Mb = megabits = millions of bits
Mb/s = megabits per second = millions of bits per second
MB = megabytes = millions of bytes
Note: Internet connections can vary greatly. These estimates assume an 85% efficient connection, which is about average. Also, if you have a Free Account, we may borrow some of your upload and download time to share with other account holders, particularly if you are a high volume user, which will increase your upload time from our website, or your download time if you are a SendThisFile® FileBox user.
Q: I want to transfer large files to multiple recipients, but you only permit one recipient per upload. Why do you do that? How can I transfer large files to multiple recipients?
A: We only allow nonEnterprise accounts to specify one recipient per upload to prevent spammers from using the SendThisFile® system. We realize this makes it a bit more inconvenient for everyone, but we feel it's worth it in the long run. If you want to transfer a large file to more than one person, the easiest way to do so is to transfer the file to yourself first. Then, when you receive the notification email, use your regular email program to forward copies of the notification email to whomever you want to receive the file. Using this technique helps both Free Account and Paid Account holders: Free Account holders benefit because the Free Account shared bandwidth pool sees less upload usage, and Paid Account holders benefit because they use up less upload bytes from their monthly allocation. Please remember that SendThisFile® reserves the right to limit uploads to, and/or downloads from, Free Accounts at any time.
Q: I started my upload, then surfed the 'Net while my file was uploading. When I went back to my "send this file" page, the upload had quit.
A: Once the upload starts, the browser that started the upload must remain open until the upload is finished. If you want to surf the 'Net while you’re uploading a file, click on "File >> New >> Window" (in Microsoft Internet Explorer) and use the new browser that opens to surf the 'Net.
Q: My recipient told me my files have "expired". What does that mean?
A: The files that are uploaded will normally remain on our server for the time periods shown under Service above. After that, anyone who tries to download the file will receive a message saying the file has expired. Note: We reserve the right to delete files uploaded from Free Accounts at any time to accommodate space for our paid account holders.
Q: Why does your upload counter sometimes show that the file I uploaded is larger than the file shows on my computer?
A: The current hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) only allows us to estimate the size of the file that is being uploaded. Our estimates can be as much as 50K bytes too large. As long as the number of bytes is larger than the file appears on your system, you can rest assured your entire file was uploaded intact. (Note: See the next question.)
Q: Can my file get corrupted when it’s sent?
A: There are two quality checks operating to keep your files intact as they move through the Internet. The transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) transfers your file across the Internet in small pieces called packets. The packets are then reassembled into your original file on your recipient’s computer. TCP/IP has a built-in "checksum" system that assures that each packet that is received by your recipient is exactly identical to the packet that was sent. When the entire upload or download is complete, TCP/IP checks to make sure that the total number of bytes received is identical to the total number of bytes sent. Between these two quality checks, your files should arrive at your recipient’s desktop exactly as they are on your desktop.
Q: I lost or never received my verification email. How do I get another one?
A: Go to the "Login and Send" section. Log in using the email address and password with which you initially registered. Another verification e-mail will automatically be sent to you.
Q: How do I change the email address you use for my account?
A: Register and verify the new email address you want to use for your account on SendThisFile. Once you have registered and verified the new email address, send us an email from the email account the matches the existing email address (the email address currently registered at SendThisFile), and describe the requested change. We require that the request come from the underlying, existing email account as a security measure. We will make the change for you. We will advise both the old and the new email addresses of the change.
Q: How do I cancel my account?
A: For cancellation instructions please go here.
Q: Do you support download accelerators?
A: No. We do not support download accelerators at this time.
Q: I can't remember my password. Can you send it to me?
A: Sure, just enter the e-mail address with which you registered your account here:
Q: I need help with something else. Where can I look? A: Right here:
